Introduction

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is no stranger to breaking boundaries, and Shang-Chi is but one example of this. Whether they are trying to explore new markets or appeal to an existing large one, this film came at the right time. With the conclusion of Phase 3, Marvel was looking ahead at what was next. While many will argue that Marvel is far removed from their glory days, there are still a few golden nuggets left. Shang-Chi was always going to fight an uphill battle. Over 10 years, fans got used to a certain group of heroes. Concluding that part of the story and introducing a new generation is no small task.

However, this film does a good job of bridging the gap between phases 3 and 4. While it can be argued that films like Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy are in a better position to do that, Shang-Chi still holds its own. Moving forward, this superhero will play an important part in the Marvel story under Disney. While it was Captain America and Iron Man who originally recruited him in the Marvel Now comics, the next Avengers movie will tell a different story. With both leaders of the Avengers, Iron Man and Captain America either dead or retired, Shang-Chi might be the next Superhero to take charge.

Fighting The Box Office With Shang-Chi

While Shang-Chi was not an overwhelming box office success, the audience reception was quite positive. With an audience score of 98 on Rotten Tomatoes, they proved that they could appeal to a different audience. The obvious market they were shooting for was China. Disney has been trying to appeal to that audience for years now, and finally, they finally found their poster hero. Sadly, the box office numbers could have been better. While they grossed $432 million worldwide, with Marvel and their ridiculous budgets, this movie barely broke even.

Shang Chi had a budget of almost $200 million. As always, there is a simple rule in the box office. You have to at least double or sometimes triple the budget to know what the real cost of the movie is. If a film costs $200 million, it does not include marketing and advertising. Film studios usually at least double their budget for advertising. This means that Shang-Chi cost Disney and Marvel at least $400 million. Sadly, it means that the film likely did not turn over a large profit, if any at all. However, Disney still regards this film as a success due to the Market they are reaching for. As such, we will see a sequel and guess appearances in other movies.

Conclusion

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings marks a significant milestone in the representation of Asian heroes. By breaking stereotypes, embracing cultural authenticity, and exploring universal themes of family and identity, Shang-Chi adds a layer of depth and complexity to the MCU. The film’s success serves as a testament to the appetite for diverse stories and characters. It paves the way for a more inclusive and representative future in the world of superhero cinema. Shang-Chi is not just a hero; he is a symbol of progress and a catalyst for change in the way we perceive and celebrate heroes on the big screen.

While you can argue that this is simply another classic case of Disney joining the Panderverse, the conclusion still has a positive impact. Marvel wanted to break into the Chinese market further with this film. To pretend otherwise would be dishonest. having a Chinese superhero from and center leading Marvel into a new age was always the goal. However, regardless of the motives, having Asian representation is still a big milestone.

However, the Spider-Verse came decades later, in 2014. This new vision for the superhero created a whole new world. It introduced us to versions of the character while also bringing back old ones.
