Massive Fail: The Marvels In Embarrassing Shape

The Marvels is in trouble
The Marvels is in trouble

The Marvels are in trouble. Over the last few years, Marvel has hit a bit of a slump. They are far removed from their glory days leading up to the end of phase 3. Since End Game, things have taken a wrong turn for this superhero franchise.

The most recent movie finding itself under the microscope is the upcoming The Marvels movie starring Brie Larson. In many ways, the film is branded as a launching pad for the cinematic universe’s future. The first Captain Marvel movie garnered massive box office success. They released it right after the third Avengers movie, leading to End Game.

Disney was very smart with marketing the movie and sold it as a must-watch to Avengers fans. The strategy paid off perfectly, as Captain Marvel grossed over $1 billion. Although the box office success of this film cannot be denied, public opinion on the movie was very split. Many felt that the movie was average at best. To make matters worse, public sentiment regarding the star was even worse.

The Brie Larson Strategy

Brie Larson made many controversial statements about the fan base that did not sit well with many. To make matters worse, the criticism levied against her was dismissed as toxic fans hating women, and thus the divide became even more significant. The result was clear, regardless of where you fall with this debate. Many people dislike Brie Larson, which can negatively affect the box office.

The sequel to Captain Marvel, called The Marvels, will also feature a solid supporting cast. Iman Vellani will reprise her role as Miss Marvel, and Teyonah Parris will accompany her. Miss Marvel was first introduced to us in the latest Doctor Strange movie. Since then, she has received her very own Disney Plus show. Sadly, this series was also not received very well by fans.

This brings us back to The Marvels, which Disney has officially delayed. Although slated to have been released in July, it will now be pushed back to early November. Original reports suggested that the film was pushed back due to post-production work that needed to be done.

The Marvels Is In Trouble

Delaying a movie is nothing new. It can drastically improve the quality. This is one of the reasons why most people did not overthink when Disney made the announcement. Since then, it has been revealed that the reason for the delay is far worse than most would have expected. Unfortunately, it won’t come as much of a surprise to anyone.

Recent reports have suggested that during screen tests for the movie, it did not test very well with audiences. Due to this, showrunners decided to push things back to make some much-needed changes. It should be pointed out that Marvel did not confirm any of this. They will not just come out and admit that their movie sucks, which is why the delay occurs.

There are, however, also other concerns. The audience does not relate well with Brie Larson, and the producers at Marvel are very concerned about this. Most feel that if this problem is addressed, the movie will receive Star Wars hate. Disney does not want this level of toxicity, and thus, they decided to step in. The Marvels is in trouble, but they hope to fix this through reshoots.

Marvel Boss Talks Quality Over Quantity

This is not the first time that the head of Marvel, Kevin Feige, has expressed his concerns. He has previously stated that quantity should never be a substitute for quality. He also indicated a desire within the studio to slow down and rethink how they will be doing things moving forward.

Slowing down is something that the cinematic universe can benefit from. After Phase Three, Marvel has been in a spiral, and it is tough to see them recover at this point. Although Phase 4 did have its moments, mostly thanks to Spiderman, nothing memorable came from it.

One of the most anticipated movies was Black Widow. Although not the worst in the franchise, it left little to be desired. Shang-Chi was one of those exceptions I was referring to earlier. It might not have been a massive box-office success, but it did score well with both the audience and critics. Sadly, the same cannot be said for Thor’s Love and Thunder. Although most loved the third movie, most fans rejected the latest one. They reduced Thor to a complete comedy act, and most disliked it.

The Marvel Failure Of Disney Plus

On Disney Plus, most of the series did not fare much better, either. Although Loki and Wanda Vision did start things off positively, the same cannot be said about the rest. Falcon and the Winter Soldier did have its moments. Sadly, it did not contribute much to the future of the Captain America universe. You are welcome to disagree with that. To the credit of Hawkeye, this show was much better than some of the other shows on the list.

She-Hulk probably garnered the most hate. From the start, fans did not like the idea. Most felt that the show was bashing the fanbase. To make matters worse, showrunners and actors thought it a good idea to say stupid things to the people they expected to support them. As with Brie Larson and Captain Marvel, this did not go over well with anyone. Fans were already uneasy over She-Hulk as they felt that Hulk was being put down to raise his female counterpart. The bashing of the fans was the final nail.

Sadly, moving forward, things are not set to get better anytime soon. The new faces of Marvel are already taking shape; right now, there is still much to be desired. Granted, the fanbase was very spoiled with the first crop of talent. Having Robert Downey Junior, Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth under one banner is no tiny feet. These actors and their other co-starts, such as Scarlett Johansson, made this universe what it is today.

The Shoes That Can Never Be Filled

They left a massive mark on this universe; filling those shoes would always be hard. Unlike DC, where we have had multiple Batmans and Multiple Supermans, with Marvel, many of these heroes were first of their kind. Evans was the first mainstream Captain America. The same can be said about Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey Junior.

Everyone has their favorite Superman or Batman actor, but these guys were the first mainstream ones. Thus, it is going to take a lot of work to replace them properly. They are trying to replace Captain America with Falcon, but it will likely be years before fans accept someone new. Ironheart has already replaced Robert Downey Junior and Iron Man, but once again, this new actress will have a tough time.

The only hope Marvel has now is to slow things down drastically. If they rethink their strategy and take a break, they could one day build things back up again. Sadly, we know that is not going to happen. Disney has already tasted the money, and they will likely beat this thing to death with a stick.
