Blizzard Is At It Again As Overwatch 2 Tank

Overwatch 2 is labeled the worst game on Steam as players push back against Blizzard. The decline of Activision Blizzard has been a sad story to observe. A company that used to be the gold standard of video games has been reduced to a shell of itself as they push battle passes, microtransactions, and any other scheme they can think of. Although they still have their moments, they are far removed from their glory days. Despite everything, Activision Blizzard is still a vastly profitable company. While they might have shrunk in player base, they still record profits.

This is mainly due to how game publishers choose to monetize their games. They no longer make money on the sale. They make most of their profits once the game has been sold. I do not need to explain this business model, but I will do it anyway. You create a game and cut 30% of the content. 70% of the game is sold as a standard addition for $70, while the other 30% is sold as part of a $100 deluxe edition. Then, you open a shop and sell cosmetics, fake money, and everything else you can think of.

It is a widely effective business model that allows publishers like Activision Blizzard to make billions yearly. This business model is so popular that most gamers have accepted it as the industry standard. Many gamers defend this model as necessary. It is all part of the lie. Publishers like EA and Blizzard tell you that they need to do this. Otherwise, they won’t be able to make profits anymore. This is an easily disprovable lie but more on that later. First, let’s talk about Overwatch 2.

The Overwatch 2 Disaster

Since the announcement of Overwatch 2, fans have been scratching their heads over why another game needed to be made. At first, there was mild excitement surrounding it. They announced all-new battle modes and stated that fans could get the game for free if they were already an owner of the original game—most fans were smart enough to understand that things were too good to be true. Blizzard does not give away anything for free if they do not profit from it. As a business, you are free to do so, but you also have a responsibility to create value.

The last part is where the publisher needs to improve. Many feel that Overwatch was stolen from them. They purchased the original game, and many had fun playing. When Overwatch 2 launched, players were forced to move over and no longer have access to the original. The current version of the game is filled with Microtransactions, broken promises, and lies. People are unhappy with many decisions Overwatch 2 decided to make. Many are dissatisfied with the removal of the tank role and the rework of other beloved characters.

One word that is used a lot for Overwatch 2 is scam. I will remind you that the original game was filled with loot boxes, so it takes a lot to anger this fanbase. However, the recent set of skins released for the game at a price point of 15 dollars has many people upset. There is no new hero and two hours of scripted content. It is a steep price to pay for no actual playable content. This is not the worst game on Steam, but their business practices still need improvement.

Why People Hate Overwatch 2

The biggest issue Overwatch 2 is currently faced with is overpromising. This is one of the worst things you can do as a studio. First, create the game and then talk about it. We have seen this mistake multiple times before. Companies want to build hype and make empty promises they cannot keep. Halo Infinite stepped into this trap, and Overwatch 2 is next to them. Initially, they stated that they would keep Overwatch 1 alive. Most people knew that this was never going to happen. There were also promises of giant campaigns. Since then, they have stated that they will focus more on multiplayer.

I do not believe anyone is playing Overwatch for the story, but this was one of the things that justified a new game. All the latest maps and heroes have also been far and in between. All of this leads us back to the same question. Why bother with a new game if there is insufficient content to justify it? You could have easily added new heroes, maps, and even a DLC story to the existing game. At some level, I have to believe that the developers started with pure intentions. The game was on a steep decline, and they thought the hype of a new game could breathe life back into the franchise.

Sadly this was the worst thing that they could do. Giant publishers like Activision Blizzard are accountable to the shareholders. Even if the studio has good intentions, you are responsible for forever growth. This means you cannot make lots of money; you must make all the money. The shareholders expect every game to be Fortnite or Minecraft. Anything less than that is regarded as a failure. Publishers no longer serve the gamers but instead the investors.

The Modern Gaming Problem

When developers create a game and a publisher releases it, they no longer consider it a good player experience. Instead, they need to focus on what will generate the most profits as they are responsible for the shareholders. Gaming is now a multi-billion dollar business. Gamers no longer run studios. Business people run them. Hollywood actors and directors are involved in the development process. As such, profits will always be the only priority. You cant make millions in-game sales. You need to make billions every year.

This is why we are seeing companies like Blizzard do these things. Overwatch 2 has one main priority: to dominate the space. As such, you will always find over-promises and rushed end products coming from them. It is unfortunate, but this is the state that we are currently finding ourselves in. Luckily it is not all doom and gloom. There are still game companies out there that are focused on creating great gaming experiences. We just saw that with the release of Baldur’s Gate 3. Before that, it was Eldin Ring.

As more publishers like Rockstar and Activision Blizzard become beholden to their corporate overlords, smaller teams are popping up and creating great gamer experiences for the players. It is no secret that gaming is in a bothersome state. I am trying to remember when a Triple-A game launched without any bugs. It is industry standard to release first and fix later. We, as gamers, are so used to this that we praise companies if they release a playable product at launch.

Many people have praised Baldurs Gate over the last few days because the game is working and is not riddled with Microtransactions. This should not be praiseworthy. It is the way that it should be. You give the company the total price; you get the entire game in working order. Due to the low bar, we praise games costing only $70. Publishers have conditioned us into thinking that it is normal to charge $70 and then fill the game with an extra $1000 of add-ons that should have been included in the base game.

They then lie and tell us they must do this to survive while making billions yearly. Gaming is great when it wants to be, but games like Overwatch 2 can be a reminder of how bad things can get.

  1. […] Overwatch 2 could be doing better. Since launched, they have been labeled as the worst game on Steam. Whether they deserve that label is for the players to decide. Regardless of where you fall, it is undeniable that they made some bad decisions with the game. There are over 150 thousand reviews, and most of them are overwhelmingly negative. One must wonder how long Steam will take to delete and hide some user scores. Overwatch managed to go from a game of the year to one of the most despised games on the internet. It is hard to imagine how quickly they managed to fall. […]
