Fans Push Back Against Mortal Kombat 1 Poor Port

Mortal Kombat 1 is officially out, and fan opinions on the game are divided. Mortal Kombat, over the years, has received a massive amount of success. The last two iterations have been hailed as critical and commercial gold standards. This IP is considered one of the most notorious within the fighting space. Street Fighter is the only other fighting game that could be regarded as more famous. Regardless of their recent success, the games do not come without their flaws.

Over the years, they have found themselves in a fair bit of controversy. The elephant in the room is the violent imagery of the games. While this is why so many are in love with the game, certain governing bodies do not share this opinion. As a result, a fair bit of censorship has taken place. The idea of this game being too violent is ridiculous, and most will agree that censoring it is the worst possible outcome. While this controversy cannot be placed at the feet of the studio, there are many decisions that Mortal Kombat has made over the years that made consumers lose trust in it.

These controversies include terrible micro-transaction policies and character censorship. While certain governing bodies try to hide the violence, consumers are desperate for more games that are not afraid to be themselves. For Mortal Kombat 1, it is not the gameplay that upset people but rather the state of the game itself. At its core, many people are enjoying this latest iteration. Sadly, this experience is not shared across the board. For this, you can thank inferior game ports.

Mortal Kombat 1 Nintendo Port

Although some enjoy their experience with Mortal Kombat 1, Nintendo fans do not share these sentiments. The current Nintendo Switch port is deplorable, and many fans are calling it out. While obvious reasons exist for this poor port, many are still unhappy. The current version of the Nintendo Switch is clearly out of date. The hardware is no longer strong enough to keep up with Triple-A games. Thus, you cannot expect a Switch port to have meaningful visuals.

However, for many fans, this is not a reasonable excuse. The rule for ports is simple. If you are going to port a game and ask for $70, you need to ensure that the game is in working order. There were similar debates a few years back with Cyberpunk 2077. It was also a completely broken mess when they ported the game over to the previous generation of consoles. Many excused these bad ports by asking what you expected from old technology. While at its core, this is a fair question to ask, the studio is still responsible.

If you know that an outdated piece of hardware cannot support your game, you cannot continue to port it and allow people to spend money on it. The current state of the game on Nintendo Switch is not great. While I do not think the market for this game lies on the Switch, you still have a few who will be playing the game via this platform. To sell this version of the game for $70 is crazy. They should have waited for the new switch to be released before porting this game. If you did spend any money as a Nintendo gamer, you might want to consider a refund.

Mortal Kombat 1 Voice Acting

However, it is not only bad ports that are frustrating fans. Many think that some of the voice acting is less than desirable. One particular voice actress being questioned is Megan Fox. Her performance as Nitara leaves much to be desired. The use of celebrities in video games is nothing new. It is a strategy we are seeing more of. Studios often turn to famous actors to sell more games. Video games have evolved a lot over the years. We have moved away from regular 3D models with a few voice-over lines.

Many Triple-A studios use full-on motion capture that requires actors and even stunt doubles. Because the scope of these video game roles has increased so much, studios often turn to Hollywood for casting. Call of Duty, Far Cry, and Cyberpunk are examples of this. For many pure gamers, this is unacceptable. You could have hired a real professional voice actor with The money you spent getting a person like Megan Fox to under-deliver her lines. I do not even believe that Megan Fox will move any units.

Voice acting is not an easy job. For a fighting game, it is even more of a challenge. You get a few lines you need to read, and it is hard not to sound like a robot. Even the best voice actors sometimes get it wrong. While all of the hate against Fox might not be warranted, the criticism is certainly fair. Use a celebrity in your adverts and allow real video game professionals to read the lines. If you want to use a star for your game, ensure they fit the part.

The Many Mortal Kombat Controversies

It is not just with Mortal Kombat 1 that fans take issue with, but with the IP as a whole. While fans enjoy this franchise, some of their practices have been less than desirable. In the past, their cosmetic Microtransactions have angered many fans. Using real money to unlock skins some feel should be included is not a great look. For Mortal Kombat 11, you had to spend over $6000 to get every skin. While this is purely cosmetic, it still leaves plenty to be desired. However, there was a time when they also tried to charge you for fatalities.

This was one of the most controversial decisions that Mortal Kombat has ever made. The pushback from the community was swift, and since then, they have not tried to do anything like that again. Sadly, if they did that again today, they will likely get away with it. Microtransactions are a massive part of gaming, and many fans justify it. In addition to this, other forms of censorship have also been under the microscope. The portrayal of women has been a hotly contested topic.

A few months ago, there were rumblings that Mortal Kombat would change many women’s outfits to not over-sexualize them; as you can imagine, this outraged many in the community. Revealing clothes does not always mean you are sexualizing someone. Even in cases where you are, most agree that it is still acceptable because it is a video game. Changing the appearance of certain characters is unacceptable to many. Due to this, many fans have been turned away from Mortal Kombat as a whole.

Despite all of this, Mortal Kombat remains very popular. Fans are enjoying the current version of the game, and most do not care about past controversies. The biggest question is whether Mortal Kombat 1 is good. The consensus is that this is a solid game with a good story. If you look past the poor Nintendo port, you will find a fun game.

  1. […] With companies now riddling their games with microtransactions and deluxe additions, games can often end up costing way more than the $70 asking price. For a while now, there have been concerns that GTA 6 might be extremely expensive. Some rumors suggest that the base game will set you back at least $120. While I did not believe that rumor in the beginning, I am starting to think that it might be true. While none of this is confirmed, my prediction is that GTA 6 will have more than one version at release. They will have a standard version for $70 that is stripped of most content. […]
