This is something we all are guilty of. I spend hours looking for the best headline to write. Journalists engaging in this same practice is not a criticism but a relevant observation. As time passed, outlets realized you could bait your audience and garner more attention. Although this is a short-term strategy, it does work. When there is a theme and an enemy, people will click.
Over the last few years, the big boogeyman for video game journalists has been attractive women in video games. Anything that even remotely showcases a woman’s features is immediately labeled sexism. While sometimes these issues can be genuine in video games, other times, there is no sinister motive behind companies and their decision to engage in fan service. The truth is that people like to look at other attractive people. In video games, this is no exception.
Street Fighter 6 Under Fire Again
It is no secret why entertainment chooses to feature the best-looking people. Street Fighter is a famous household game. Their success, however, is due to more than just their great gameplay mechanics. You put an attractive girl or in-shape man on the cover, and players will flock to it. The fact that journalists are so aggressive toward this type of marketing makes no sense. I agree that particular beauty standards within the entertainment space are concerning. Models are forced to starve themselves to get work. I do not know what to say if you do not think this is an issue.
Actors need to have a specific body type to get work. Sometimes it can be so grueling that it destroys you mentally. However, the audience often demands this from their entertainment; thus, it becomes part of the job. You must be in shape if you want to be Batman or Superman. If not, the role is meant for someone else. You can go and do a comedy with Jonah Hill and Seth Green. If you want to be Barbie, you must look a particular way. You can join Amy Schumer in one of her movies if you do not. The point is that although specific beauty standards can be too much, other times, there is a reason behind it.
In entertainment spaces like Anime and Video Games, attractive people are a big selling point. Street Fighter 6 fully uses this tactic to sell its video game. However, journalists are unhappy with this and have been blasting the game for weeks. The game is being labeled as embarrassing for having what they call sexist fan service.
The Street Fighter 6 Argument is Stupid
Although labeling Street Fighter 6 as embarrassing is easy, it is essential to understand why video games exist. Like most forms of entertainment, they are designed to help us escape our reality. They have unrealistic portrayals of people that are impossible to match. The men are enormous and muscular, so it is almost impossible to compare them to humans. Women are overly attractive, so most will never come close to ever looking like that. This is part of the appeal and why people are drawn to the games.
They do impossible tasks that no mortal can ever accomplish. You cannot fight like a street fighter character and will never look like a street fighter character. This is the entire point of the game and why you choose to play. Real life can sometimes be tedious, so we escape to a world of cat girls wearing only underwear. We should not look to video games for female empowerment. If your goal is equality, let’s try and achieve that in the real world. Sadly, it is a lot easier to cry on the internet. You cannot change things in the real world, so you go after a video game girl wearing a skirt.
The journalists writing these articles are also the ones who always talk about body positivity. They go on about sex work and how people have the right to express themselves in any way. Have you ever heard the phrase, sex work is real work? These same people are now arguing against attractive women in video games. These types of people also always have the same argument when you point this out.
Your Hypocrisy Is Showing
They always respond similarly when you point out how contradicting it is to have these two opposite viewpoints. They say people who show off their bodies in the actual world consent. They have the right to express themselves however they want. The key is always consent and having autonomy over your own body. When you do it, you are simply telling yourself; however, when companies do this, they exploit people for their profits. That is why Miley Cyrus humping a doll on stage is stunning and brave, but a Street Fighter girl in a skirt is exploitative and sexist.
The part that they fail to realize is that these characters are not real. They are a product of another person’s imagination. There is an artist behind these characters who are choosing to express themselves. That artist’s expression leads to the characters we see and play with. Cammy is wearing a one-piece that is no more revealing than what Taylor Swift wears on her Eras tour. It is just a video game, and these characters are not real. However, I will still defend your right to hold these opinions. If I am allowed to get upset over Skullgirls censoring their characters, then you have the right to get angry over those characters being too revealing.
Although journalists might criticize Street Fighter 6 for being overly sexual, no real fan has ever used this against the game. There is no mass outrage from the audience. No one is calling for realistic expectations within video games. Most understand that it is fantasy. You can make a real game and even find success doing it, but for the most part, it is all fantasy.

Journalists insist that elements of sexism exist within the game. It is essential to understand that this is just a fighting game. People wear revealing clothes while fighting all the time. I will not deny that fan service does not exist in the game because it does. However, it is entirely normal. Even if the people were fighting naked, it does not make it sexist.
